“Politically Incorrect” but Common-Sense Approaches to Health & Wellbeing

You Are What You Eat

Last week I went to see Don Tolman. I’d heard his name mentioned numerous times over the last few years & thought it was time for me to go along and listen. All I knew leading up to his talk was that he promoted healthy living and eating - something I’m interested in and already know a lot about, so I was looking forward to hearing a new perspective. (Which on a side note, is something we don’t do often enough - it’s too easy to say “I already know about that”, but unless you’re practicing it fully in your own life & getting the results you want, then effectively you don’t know it - you just know of it.)

So anyway, his message about food was the “Doctrine of Signatures” - no doubt you’ve heard of it before, but interesting to have another look at it to gain some further insight into the benefits of natural food to the human body.

Another article I came across recently on Natural News about Superfoods gives another point of view to the whole topic of the food you eat and what it does for your body.

The overwhelming message I’m getting - make whole natural foods, as unprocessed as possible (and organic if you can) the major portion of your eating - giving your body the building blocks it needs to make you as healthy as possible (of course only if that’s your goal).

Here is a list of the “Superfoods” that can do wonders for your body (and they taste pretty good too):

  • Avocados
  • Blueberries
  • Beans
  • Broccoli
  • Dark chocolate
  • Garlic
  • Honey
  • Kiwi Fruit
This isn’t an exhaustive list by any means - you can read more about this in the article itself.
Cheers

Plants Keeping Your Home (and you) Healthy

Dracaena fragrans ‘Massangeana’, corn plant

I’m not much of a green thumb, but when I read the attached article, I was heartened to hear that even I could keep plants in my house (that would actually live), improve the health of my home and consequently the health of my entire family.

The image to the left is a picture of a Corn plant - “Dracaena fragrans ‘Massangeana”. I have one of these in my living room - it doesn’t look quite as good as that yet :)

Here is a list of indoor plants that can improve the the quality of your home:

  • Ficus benjamina, weeping fig
  • Philodendron, sweetheart plant
  • Green spider plant or variegated spider plant
  • Dracaena marginata, dragon tree
  • Dracaena fragrans ‘Massangeana’, corn plant
  • Golden pathos

Regular vs Diet Soft Drinks?

I think the video clip in my previous post has certainly given readers something to think about with respect to dental health, but what about diet soft drinks? Is it just the sugar in regular soft drinks that is the culprit, meaning diet soft drinks without sugar are ok?

Sadly this isn’t the case as artificial sweeteners contained in diet soft drinks are the worst thing you could possibly allow into your body

Don’t believe me - do a search on Google for artificial sweeteners - there is an absolute plethora of information

Here is one site that is particularly informative - definitely worth the read - I’d be surprised if it didn’t have some effect on your drinking habits

So in answer to the question of Regular vs Diet Soft Drinks - the best answer is Neither, but if you feel you absolutely must, choose regular (to avoid all the horrible effects of artificial sweeteners mentioned in the article).

To your health

$150 Teen Dental Bonus

The “great” news on the weekend was that our newly elected prime minister was implementing a $360 million Teen Dental Plan to begin on July 1st.

As primary school children already receive school dental services under State Government plans, and according to OECD figures, the dental health of Australian adults ranks second to worst among developing countries, perhaps the government feels that teenagers are the ones that need to be targeted.

In “The Age” newspaper on Sunday in the article “Dental Scheme will ease the pain: Rudd”, the Prime Minister was quoted as saying:

“We have a huge problem in terms of dental health in the country”

For the majority of people who fall into the category of being eligible for this dental subsidy, this would be of great benefit - extra money from the government to fund regular dental checkups.

Is anyone questioning the reason behind teenagers having such bad teeth that they require a subsidy to encourage them to go for regular checkups?

Don’t we have water fluoridation in Australia? We’ve all been led to believe that this toxic addition to our water is meant to improve the state of our teeth.

I guess it’s not doing it’s job - perhaps a big con by the powers that be?

Perhaps parents taking some responsibility in educating their children (and being an example for them) about the damaging effects of sweet, fizzy, acidic soft drinks and the benefits of abstaining, would have a greater impact on our ranking as the second worst in terms of dental health in developed countries?

Dental checkups are great, but they are no substitute for taking care of your teeth in the first place and preventing the things that a dentist may need to fix

Check out this video I found on how acidic soft drinks really can be:

Vaccination, Immunisation, Homeoprophylaxis

I’ve noticed in reading and research I’ve done over the past few years that there is some misleading terminology used with regards to Vaccination, Immunisation and Homeoprophylaxis.

I believe it is vitally important that as a group of people with alternative views on health to mainstream medical opinion, it is absolutely essential we use correct terminology to prevent unnecessary attack from orthodox medical institutions and to also assist parents new to this information to truly make an informed decision.

Even doctors get the terms “vaccination” and “immunisation” mixed up, so it’s little wonder that the average person may not know the difference. So here are some definitions of these commonly mis-used words.

To “vaccinate” is the process of administering a vaccine to force the body to make antibodies against a particular disease, in the hope that when the body is next exposed to that disease, the antibodies will be used to fight it and “prevent” infection.

To “immunise” is to make a person immune to a particular disease, and at this stage, no vaccine on the market can 100% guarantee protection against the diseases vaccinated for - as is evidenced by the countless reports of children/adults being affected by diseases they were vaccinated and supposedly immunised against.

“Homeoprophylaxis” - is NOT homeopathic immunisation as you may have read on some websites. The Australian Homeopathic Association has written this official position statement which explains this beautifully.

Dr. Isaac Golden (the current leading authority on Homeoprophylaxis) defined Homeoprophylaxis as: “the systematic use of homeopathically potentised substance to prevent the development of the characteristic symptoms of infectious disease.”

The term “prophylaxis” means an action taken to prevent disease - this action can be homeopathic treatment, dietary improvements, removal of toxins in personal care products and the living environment.

So in effect, by incorrectly using the term Homeoprophylaxis to mean homeopathic vaccination or immunisation would be as silly as saying that eating an organic/biodynamic diet could be termed as dietary vaccination - it just doesn’t make sense.

Homeopathy is already accused of being quackery or ‘non-science’ by orthodox medical institutions around the world, using incorrect terminology just perpetuates that and it confuses parents who are trying to make the best decision for their children.

Really, the term “immunise” should be used if at all, to refer to a wholistic way of living that improves a persons resistance to infection i.e. using homeopathy, eating a natural balanced diet of organic/biodynamic produce, drinking plenty of fresh, clean, non-fluoridated water, using safe personal care products, eliminating/reducing toxin exposure in the home, taking good quality supplements and reducing stress by focussing on the great things in life (rather than the negative).

Here’s to healthy living and natural immunity.
