Do Babies See When They Are Asleep?

This is probably a really strange question, but, do babies see when they are asleep?
I’ve noticed sometimes when Daniel is sleeping, his eyelids aren’t completely closed. Last night while he was asleep on my lap, his eyelids were partly opened so I gently opened one of his eyes (he was in a very deep sleep because he didn’t even twitch). Because of the position he was sleeping in, he was looking directly at me, but did he see me?
